Five works by Sebastian Claren from 1996 to 2004, for accordion and string trio, ensemble, solo piano and orchestra. Schott sums up his music as a kind of "organized confusion": a constant switch between continuity and discontinuity, built with montage-like splices and many changing viewpoints.
Claren was born in Mannheim in 1965. He studied composition with Helmuth Weinland, musicology, philosophy and art history in Heidelberg and Berlin, and later composition with Walter Zimmermann and Mathias Spahlinger. He is also the author of Neither: Die Musik Morton Feldmans (2000), a study of Feldman's complete output. His prizes include the Kranichstein Music Prize, the Boris Blacher Prize and a sponsorship prize of the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung. He has held residencies in New York (DAAD), Paris, Rome (Villa Massimo) and Los Angeles (Villa Aurora), and teaches composition at Seoul National University since 2021. Teodoro Anzellotti and trio recherche play Potemkin I: Baby Baby. ensemble mosaik under Enno Poppe plays the two ensemble works, and Ernst Surberg plays Alkan. Charms: Dub is performed by the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR under Matthias Hermann.
Potemkin I: Baby Baby (2003), for accordion and string trio, opens the disc at over eighteen minutes. Fehlstart (Detail) (1999) is for six instruments, and In der Hölle (1996/2000) for eleven. Alkan (1997) is a fourteen-minute piano piece whose title names the nineteenth-century composer Charles-Valentin Alkan. Charms: Dub (2004) for orchestra closes the programme.
Claren puts his position bluntly: "In my estimation, culture and good-breeding are completely out of place in a work of art." The music should first refer only to itself. Schott stresses that his pieces are not montages in the strict sense, since they do not reproduce things said elsewhere. They aim at the dense simultaneity of inner events seen from the composer's own vantage point. Certain styles of pop music matter to him as much as the roughly hundred years of modern music and its forerunners.
