First recording of Enno Poppe's Rundfunk for nine synthesizers (2015-2018), played by Ensemble Mosaik with audio software by Wolfgang Heiniger, recorded in 2019 at the Haus des Rundfunks, Berlin. Co-production with Deutschlandfunk Kultur.

Rundfunk is a work for nine synthesizers by Enno Poppe, and his first composition to rely entirely on electronic sound. It uses historical sounds rather than historical instruments: the players sit at nine computers and nine keyboards, and the sounds of the 1960s and 70s are rebuilt in software. This is the first recording of the work.

Poppe, born in 1969, has worked with programming and electroacoustic techniques since his student days, and also as a conductor, yet until Rundfunk none of his pieces had been purely electronic. The label describes his attitude as a sympathetic scepticism. The performers are Ensemble Mosaik, which Poppe has directed since 1998: Chatschatur Kanajan, Karen Lorenz, Mathis Mayr, Roland Neffe, Poppe himself and others. Wolfgang Heiniger, a Swiss percussionist, composer and sound designer who has worked with Poppe for more than twenty years, wrote the audio software. The recording was made in 2019 in Saal 3 of the Haus des Rundfunks in Berlin, as a co-production with Deutschlandfunk Kultur and with the support of the Kunststiftung NRW.

The sound sources are FM synthesis, the Minimoog and the Piganino, but because only computer reconstructions are used, everything sounds different from the way it did then. The sound is taken apart and put back together. The players are not keyboard virtuosos but virtuosos of electronic sound, and the piece is about them as much as about the material. It returns human physicality to electronic music through the bodies of its performers, which is why the label calls it post-digital. The work is in three parts, Rundfunk I, II and III, of about 19, 15 and 23 minutes.

Written between 2015 and 2018, Rundfunk was first performed on 20 October 2018 at Donaueschingen. Reviewing the disc for MusicWeb International, Richard Hanlon was not won over by its length, finding the third part over-long and harsh, which gives an idea of how uncompromising the sound can be. The piece belongs to a line of collaborations between Poppe and Heiniger that also includes Rad, Arbeit and Tonband.

CD, Wergo WER 7388 2, released in 2019 in the Edition Enno Poppe series, first recording.
