Hard-swinging Messengers material on Cadet, the jazz arm of the Chess family - Chicago's great blues house taking its shot at the hard bop market, and doing it with taste. Art Blakey delivering exactly what the title promises: no-nonsense, blues-drenched, riff-driven jazz with the drums pushing everything forward like a tide. The Cadet jazz catalog remains underrated territory for diggers - plenty of strong sessions hiding behind less famous cover art - and this is a solid piece of it. The shuffle in Blakey's ride cymbal alone is worth the price of admission. Japanese pressing, and a nice off-the-beaten-path entry for the Blakey shelf.
