Ulenflucht is the portrait CD of Anna Korsun in the Edition Zeitgenössische Musik, five works from 2011 to 2017 that push at aesthetic boundaries. The scorings run from the unusual organ of the Kunst-Station Sankt Peter in Cologne to a vocal ensemble of twenty performers. Korsun writes mainly for acoustic instruments, adds everyday objects, and draws from them sounds that can seem electronically produced.
Korsun was born in Ukraine in 1986, studied composition in Kiev and in Munich with Moritz Eggert, and is based in Germany. Her awards include the Gaudeamus Award and the Kunstpreis Berlin. A trained soprano, she sings in several pieces recorded especially for this CD. The other performers include the organist Dominik Susteck, the guitarist Flavio Virzì and the ensemble Looptail, with Johanna Zimmer and Andreas Fischer of the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart among the singers. Eggert himself plays piano and sings in Wehmut. The booklet is by Ingo Dorfmüller.
In Tollers Zelle (2017), for electric guitar and soprano, Korsun's voice merges with the glissandi of a bottleneck guitar. auelliae (2016), for organ, is the centre of the disc at almost 21 minutes, with Alina Gehlen assisting Susteck. Here Korsun draws remarkable sounds from two wind throttle stops. Wehmut (2011) is for five voices, prepared piano, violin, double bass and sound objects. In the title work Ulenflucht (2016) twenty performers sing and play. Plexus (2014), for ensemble, is played by Looptail.
Dorfmüller writes that Korsun often takes a single theme, idea or vision "and pursues it into depths so profound as to become existential". He calls this a "hazardous sound", and it stands against a quite traditional sense of form. The disc received an award in February 2019. In the jury statement Marita Emigholz singled out auelliae and the way Korsun throws the history and tradition of instruments overboard. The recordings come from co-productions of Deutschlandfunk and the German Music Council, the Gaudeamus Muziekweek and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München.
