From Humboldt County in Northern California, Starving Weirdos, the duo of Brian Pyle and Merrick McKinlay, return to Discrepant after Atheistsaregods (2023) with another chapter of their lysergic invocations. They draw on a wide range of sources, organic and electronic, voices, violins, flutes, synths and pedals, and sequence them into a ritualistic tapestry that sounds like it comes from an ancient future.
Side A opens with a synth beam and distant field recordings in 'Sin Indioma', which turn into a dirge-like procession of drums and bells, flows into the cave ambience of 'Nightshade', full of echoes of unknown origin, and through a foggy drone into the fractured melodies and creeping voices of 'No Chance'. Side B moves from 'Squall Line' to 'Catacumbo', 'Kalnu Parkas' and the closing 'Totality': faraway war cries, dissonant strings and crumbling percussion, post-apocalyptic landscapes and murky atmospheres, ending with a glimmer of processed flutes.
