Green vinyl with grey. Pengo is: John Schoen, Jason Finkbeiner, R. Nuuja. Pengo comes from Rochester, NY and are simply a dark-bright beacon of madness in the subterranean swamp of psychedelic junk collectors. They're kind of elusive, having issued only an LP prior to this release (it had been a year since we're working on this album) + a few CD-Rs and tapes. Got affiliations with Coffee & the Doyle EAE... wild stuff/weird vibes!
Originally from Sacramento, CA this is a rude boy duo. The record begins with some of the most crude and rough guitar/drums duo mu ever! Then you'll drift toward a far away place... to be finally hypnotized for 25 minutes by a side-long track... derailing!
Daniel is best known for his work as the lyricist and frontman of Lungfish, whose work on Dischord Records spans 3 decades. This release is a limited edition full color 6x8" hardcover book + CD. COMME A LA RADIO features vocalist Brigitte Fontaine backed by The Art Ensemble Of Chicago. Import reissue of 1971 album for the French vanguard pop chanteuse & The Art Ensemble Of Chicago. Here, the Art Ensemble provide the perfect mysterious ethereal backdrop for her vocal explorations. With strangely charted arrangements & mixing, the ten tracks here defy any & all conventions & result in the most provocative popular recording of 1971. The entire album runs all over the stylistic map while no…
1976 was a year of flux and change. For the recording of the fifth Area album, the core membership of Stratos, Fariselli, Tofani and Tavolazzi were present, but drummer Capiozzo only appears on about half of the album, replaced on various tracks by either Walter Calloni or Paul Litton. Steve Lacy augments the band, as do several other studio musicians (including a string quartet). Perhaps it was the contributions of this eclectic group of guests that gives Maledetti its bi-directional feel. On o…
The 4th album from the band that I consider to be possibly the finest Italian progressive rock band of the 1970's, & certainly a band in the top tier of all early 1970's progressive bands worldwide! Area combined jazz/rock/stolen ethnic music (mostly from Eastern Europe and the Middle East)/the avant garde and more. Superb playing from all (vocals/organ, guitar, electric piano/synths, bass & drums). This includes a thick booklet with rare photos, notes, etc. While everyone shines, the vocalist, …
Religious Knives = Maya Miller and Mike Bernstein of Double Leopards and Nate Nelson of Mouthus. I have a special place in my heart for both groups, and was enamored with the first Religious Knives record, Remains, a compilation of CD-R, seven-inch, and vinyl-only material. The tracks were an amalgamation of the more droning aspects of both groups, fleshed out with some ghostly vocals and ’70s Italian horror movie-style keyboard supplements. Given the nature of the noise scene’s penchant for col…
Though each member of the 13th Assembly is acclaimed in their own right this group is very much a singular musical experience. A planned NPR piece should help raise exposure for this sublime recording.
The Thirteenth Assembly began as a touring collective made up of four musicians and four musically distinct small ensembles: Tomas and Taylor's duo; Mary and Jessica's duo; Taylor's trio with Mary and Tomas; and the collaborative quartet featured on this recording. The group is a microcosm of an e…
Hala Strana, is a project of LA-based multi-instrumentalist (and multi-instrument builder) Steven R. Smith, who is a member of Jewelled Antler flagship improv psych group Thuja and a solo artist in his own right. Hala Strana is his vehicle for instrumental droned-out Eastern European folk music appreciation/interpretation, and really represents some of his finest work to date. Multitracking turns Steven R. Smith into a one-man village orchestra, playing everything from violin to optigan, bul bul…
The fifth and final volume in the "Cosmic Debris" series of split ART-LP releases set up by the Opalio brothers, aka MY CAT IS AN ALIEN (MCIAA), on their own Opax Records, ends up at its best with the space duo sharing the vinyl surface with the legendary avant-blues guitarist Loren M. Connors. Connors, who can be considered as the last real bluesman on earth, has the rare ability to turn single guitar chords into pure poetry, and don't you think we all need more of that in these dark days? The …
Beyond the Boundary of Time documents the last live performance of the legendary Revolutionary Ensemble before Leroy Jenkins's death in 2007. This recording was made of a performance on May 25, 2005 in Warsaw, Poland. In the 1970s, the Revolutionary Ensemble introduced New York to decided musical advances, many pioneered by Chicago's A.A.C.M. musicians. Ex-Chicagoan Leroy Jenkins, who played violin, of all unheard-of modern jazz instruments, had formed his concept from classical, swing, blues, a…
The legendary singer-songwriter and one-time teen idol re-emerges with his first album in 11 years. Anyone expecting conventional rock or pop should look elsewhere, however, as it is even more challenging than previous release 'Tilt.'
The sixth edition of the SYR series is a live recording of the April 12, 2003 benefit concert held at and for The Anthology Film Archives, the international center for the preservation, study, and exhibition of avant-garde and independent cinema. In addition to screening films for the public, AFA houses a film museum, research library and art gallery.
The event, which raised money for the Archives and celebrated the life and work of avant-garde film maker Stan Brakhage, featured Sonic Youth prov…
2005 release ** "In "Rhythmajik", Z'EV has radically reformulated the mystical tradition commonly known as the Qabalha from an Astral/Cosmological focus, to an Earth-based paradigm, in harmony with the needs of our current time. It requires no knowledge of the Qabalha, nor does it assume or call for a prior knowledge of any of the traditional literatures. Stripping away the mysticism surrounding these teachings, Z'EV elucidates the principles behind the theories and transmits the results in as n…
Live in-person' collaborations between Hototogisu and the BxC. Hototogisu, as you know, are the time-defying duo of Matthew Bower (Skullflower, Ramleh, Sunroof!, Total, etc.) and Marcia Bassett (Double Leopards, GHQ, Zaimph, etc.). For these sessions, Burning Star Core was C. Spencer Yeh, Robert Beatty, and Trevor Tremaine (the latter two being of Hair Police, Eyes and Arms of Smoke, Sick Hour, etc.). Note that the music on this disc is different material from the Heavy Blossom companion volume …
The “Altar” album is NOT a split album. “Altar” is a collaboration album between sunn 0))) and boris that is a result of both bands conceptualizing, writing and recording the album together as one entity. Both groups have stepped outside their previous sounds and created a wholly unique album that stands on its own unique ground. There are elements of each groups trademark sound within the album but true to each groups progressive and experimental aspects, “Altar” moves into a completely new dim…
Conrad Schnitzler is a genuine legend in the krautrock and electronic music worlds. Schnitzler studied under Joseph Beuys before joining an early Tangerine Dream. Their first album Electronic Meditation shows a band highly influenced by Schnitzler's unique, singular approach. Schnitzler left Tangerine Dream to form Kluster with friends Dieter Moebius and Hans Joachim Roedelius. When Schnitzler left Kluster they changed their name to Cluster, eventually merging with Michael Rother (of Neu!) to fo…
Previously unreleased recordings from 1971. Admira is sourced from original master recordings discovered by Kluster member and Tangerine Dream engineer Klaus Freudigmann. Along with Vulcano, also being released at the same time on Important, Admira is presented here for the first time in this deluxe package. These intense sessions were made with Schnitzler at the helm, as always, after the departure of Mobius and Roedelius from the group. Conrad Schnitzler founded Kluster in 1969 along with Roed…
2004 release ** OvO is a project of music and life. OvO are Stefania Pedretti (also singer and guitar player of Allun) and Bruno Dorella (ex Wolfango, Bugo, Lava, now involved in many bands and boss of Bar La Muerte records), often joined by friends that belong to many different musical scenes. Bruno and Stefania basically started this project to stay together: they were used to follow their partner's different bands on tour, but they were also sick of the problems that every band has connected …
