Insightful essay by long-term Gong fan Mark Paytress (Mojo magazine). Ghost
Formed in 1984, Ghost burgeoned slowly, blowing open the gate in 1990 with their eponymous debut. Opening with a vast spirit plosion – shards of antique light and clouds of centuries-old, dust-laden airs escaping from a primeval tomb – they settle into the deep feeling. A variety of mostly acoustic instruments aids their projection of traditional sounds from space and time, troubadours of unknown, an enigma of eternal trippiness all about them.
Crystal Presence (The Albums 1977 - 1991)
“A curious figure as a solo artist… he precedes Byrne & Eno and practically invents Underworld”: Synth pioneer Tim Blake shines in 3CD set Crystal Presence – The Albums 1977-1991 - Daryl Easlea, Louder
Momentum
Agitation Free was one of the leading representatives of German experimental rock music in the early 1970s. From the end of 1967, the Berlin band developed long instrumental improvisations that were unusually free for the time. They achieved cult status as early as 1972 with an independent mixture of improvised rock paired with electro, ethno, jazz and trance elements. Extensive live activities made the band increasingly well-known throughout Europe. In the summer of 1972, the group appeared in …

Magick Brother
"In 1970, the world got its first taste of the original pothead pixie, Daevid Allen's Gong, as Magick Brother was released in France on the BYG label. Allen's wife, Gilli Smyth, penned all the tunes on the album, and Allen's now-classic "Ph.P." drawing style graces the inside of the gatefold. Leaning a little toward the pop end of the spectrum, Magick Brother is a fairly light album, devoid of the blatant psychedelic/hippie qualities which shine through so brilliantly on the later Camembert Elec…
Sensoria
"Where is space? Is it in our brain? Or is it outside the planet Earth? Dhidalah poetically answers the question with their newest album Sensoria. (Soma, Black Shrine) Two songs are made from their weekly jam session in Tokyo. The band leader, Gotoh usually records the session and shares it with (Masahito aka Bin and Ikuma) the other two members. After listening to the jam recording, they each get inspired by the flow of sounds and find a connection to the outside world. In the following week an…
Myth Of The Love Electrique
** Limited edition of 500 copies pressed on sun yellow vinyl. Housed in full colour gatefold sleeve with hype sticker ** Continuing the 'first time on vinyl' purge of the Acid Mothers Temple archives. Here's the band's classic 2006 album finally available on double vinyl for the first time. Housed in full colour gatefold sleeve. 'Myth of the Love Electrique' is another scorcher from these ridiculously prolific psych masters. This album is notable for being the debut of their newest band member: …
La Mosca
*In process of stocking* Released towards the end of 1989, La Mosca was the last job by the mythical Eduardo Mateo (1940-1990), one of the most influential artists in Uruguayan music. Although Mateo was a remarkable percussionist and was very well known for his short songs, with simple lyrics, where Uruguayan roots are mixed with Brazilian, African, Indian and Arabic influences, on his last album, his work took a turn on a brand new direction. Alongside the multiinstrumentalist and sound enginee…
Mythos
Mythos was formed in 1969 on the initiative of Stephan Kaske (flute, keyboards, vocals, guitar), who found two comrades-in-arms in Harald Weisse (bass) and Thomas Hildebrand (drums). Various performances impressed label boss and talent scout Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser so much that the band was able to release their debut album on the Ohr label in 1972. This album was also re-recorded and remastered from the original analog tapes. Best sound!
My Brain Collapsed
The roots of 80s English psychedelic freak band The Tryp lie in a hoax perpetuated by Steve Lines’ indie mag Mardenbeat, based in the town of Calne in the Marden Delta, which reviewed a gig by a non-existent band; former JP Sunshine main man Rod Goodway and partner Christine Cotter then gave flesh to the beast with Lines and Paul Ricketts of Unhinged mag, cutting My Brain Collapsed! as an exploration of mushroom-fuelled mental instability. First issued on cassette label Mardentapes and later by …
Death May Be Your Santa Claus
After their excellent Polydor debut suffered from lack of promotion, Second Hand’s sophomore LP surfaced on Mushroom, the noncommercial label formed by Vic Keary, Mike Craig, and Neil Richmond, allowing for unfettered experimentation. With George Hart on bass, new frontman Rob Elliott and drummer Kieran O’Connor on vibraphones, Ken Elliott takes melodic command on Mellotron, piano and organ, the disc a freakily esoteric juggernaut. This lost masterwork here comes with rare bonus tracks ‘Dip It O…
Reality
Obscure prog rockers Second Hand began as the Next Collection, formed at a south London secondary school; engineer/manager Vic Keary scored them a contract with Polydor as the Moving Finger, but their legendary debut LP was credited to Second Hand, due to a rival Moving Finger. Channelling psych and spacey acid hues, there is blues-rock underpinning Bob Gibbons’ guitar and keyboardist Ken Elliott helps aim the sound towards deep space; this edition features rare tracks ‘James in the Basement’ an…
Adventure
Released in 1980 but apparently recorded at some point in the mid-'70s, before Brainticket disbanded, Adventure sounds like the results of an all-night jam session caught on tape and sliced somewhat arbitrarily into songs. All the tunes have very similar instrumental textures, with a distinctively gurgling synthesizer twiddling along at the center of most of them. The opening "Adventure, Pt. 1" is probably the most interesting segment, a 19-minute combination of electronics with tuned percussion…
Zürich/Lausanne
*2022 stock* "Electronic music pioneers Brainticket release titled Zürich/Lausanne is a two disc set highlighting two concerts from 1983 and 1984. The Zürich concert was recorded at the Computer and Musik Symposium on February 4, 1983 and features three long tracks. Playing that night was Belgian keyboardist Joel Vandroogenbroeck (flute, synthesizer, electric piano), Hans Deyssenroth (electric piano, computer), Willy Seefeldt (electric piano) and Bruno Spoerri (lyricon). The first track “Flight …
Celestial Ocean
*2022 stock* Brainticket have almost completely abandoned the rock orientation that they presented in songs such as 'Waching You', 'Places of Light', 'Black Sand', 'Like a Place in the Sun' and 'Coco Mary', with the single exception being the track 'Egyptian Kings'. Their sound on this album is less striking, less groovy and less immediate and more more spacey and trance-inducing, more electronic and more acoustically eclectic. Beginning with the song 'Egyptian Kings', the album seems to embark …
