Niccolò Castiglioni (1932-1996) was an Italian composer, pianist and writer on music, born in Milan, where he also died. Castiglioni trained in a neo-classical idiom, then took up twelve-tone writing and the brief, aphoristic manner of Webern, and became part of the European avant-garde through the Darmstadt courses. Pierre Boulez, Bruno Maderna, Michael Gielen and Hans Rosbaud conducted his music. Castiglioni took his piano diploma at the Milan Conservatory in 1952 and his composition diploma in 1953, then worked in Salzburg with Friedrich Gulda and Boris Blacher.
