Before she became the voice of the Vienna Art Orchestra, Lauren Newton sang in the nonet of trumpeter Frederic Rabold, and Balance is one of the places to hear her early. The Frederic Rabold Crew recorded it at Tonstudio Bauer in Ludwigsburg in July 1976 and January 1977, and Calig released it in 1977.
Rabold plays trumpet and flugelhorn and wrote four of the seven pieces. Around him are Erich Stangl on soprano and alto saxophone and clarinet, Wilfried Eichhorn on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet, Walter Hüber on baritone and contrabass clarinet, Thomas Horstmann on guitar, Uli Bühl on Fender Rhodes, Fritz Heieck on bass and Manfred Kniel on drums. The writing is post-bop with a fusion rhythm section, and the band members chip in with Flying Bird, the punning Bouillabass and Achiltibuie, named after a village in the Scottish Highlands.
