Two men from the Beatles (!) control room, George Martin producing and Geoff Emerick engineering, recorded this album at AIR Studios in London in March 1974. John McLaughlin had dissolved the first Mahavishnu Orchestra a few months earlier and rebuilt his jazz-rock band with Jean-Luc Ponty on electric violin, Gayle Moran on keyboards, Ralphe Armstrong on bass, Narada Michael Walden on drums and a string trio of his own.

On top of that sits the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas in orchestrations by Michael Gibbs. Tilson Thomas also plays piano on Vision Is A Naked Sword, which runs past fourteen minutes, and Hymn To Him fills nearly all of side two at more than nineteen.
