The most quietly devastating album title in jazz, and it is entirely literal. Side one is Clifford Brown in 1952, twenty-one years old, playing rhythm and blues in Chris Powell's Blue Flames and already sounding like nobody else on the instrument. Side two is Philadelphia, June 1956, a jam session at a music store, recorded on somebody's home equipment a few hours before the car crash that killed him on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. He plays for over twenty minutes, at length and at ease, with no idea. The sound quality is what it is. The playing is beyond argument.
