1981 Japanese re-issue on Columbia's "Jazz Essential Collection 1800" series of the 1954 album. With insert and obi.

condition (record/cover): NM / EX (light foxing on back)

Insert and obi included.

One of the very few white pianists in the room when bop was being invented, and one of the most underrecorded. Al Haig played on the sessions that mattered - with Charlie Parker, with Dizzy Gillespie, on Birth Of The Cool - and then spent decades in near-total obscurity before a late rediscovery in the seventies. His playing is light, harmonically precise and completely unhurried, closer to Teddy Wilson in touch than to Bud Powell in attack, which made him unfashionable at exactly the wrong moment. Jazz Will-O'-The-Wisp catches him in the fifties, in a trio setting, doing what he did better than almost anyone.

Japanese pressing. Small-label bop piano of real distinction, and long overdue proper attention.
