Percy Faith was the orchestrator's orchestrator, the man whose Theme from A Summer Place spent nine weeks at number one in 1960 and defined a string sound that half of Hollywood then borrowed. Bon Voyage! is his travel album, one track per port of call, and he does the tourist board proud: Mediterranean guitars, a Paris accordion, a Latin section.
The Japanese Columbia pressing (SL prefix) is quiet and full, and the sleeve is a small essay on how Japan imagined a European cruise in the sixties. Faith's arrangements repay attention: the inner voicings move constantly, and there is more counterpoint here than in most film scores of the period.
