Volume 6 of Columbia's Japanese Contemporary Music Series gathers three orchestral works by composers then in their thirties. Akira Miyoshi's Concerto for Orchestra (1964) runs through three compact movements of sharp, compressed energy, and Toru Takemitsu's Textures, for piano and orchestra, later became part of his large cycle Arc.

Toshiro Mayuzumi's Mandala Symphony (1960) draws on Buddhist imagery in two movements, the second an extremely slow unfolding of sustained sound. The NHK Symphony Orchestra under Hiroyuki Iwaki recorded all three at Suginami Public Hall in May and July 1965. First edition, in a gatefold with the booklet inside.
