Campo di Marte were founded in Florence in 1971 by guitarist Enrico Rosa and drummer Mauro Sarti. Rosa composed and arranged the music of their only album, recorded in January 1973 and released that year by United Artists.
The line-up has Rosa on electric and acoustic guitars and Mellotron, Paul Richard on bass, Alfredo Barducci on French horn, flute, piano and organ, and two drummers, Sarti (also on flute) and Carlo Felice Marcovecchio. The record is a single work in seven movements (Prologo, Riflessione and Epilogo, each divided into parts), where hard guitar riffs alternate with lyrical flute and horn themes and passages of clear classical inspiration.
The label did little to promote it and the band soon disappeared, which made the album one of the rarer Italian progressive records of the decade.
