Nils Petter Molvaer's Khmer is the landmark recording that completely redefined what an ECM trumpet album could be, and one of the most influential European releases of the late 1990s. Drawing on his Norwegian jazz roots while looking firmly toward the future, Molvaer fused his keening, atmospheric trumpet with a radically contemporary palette of ambient textures, dub bass, glitchy electronics, samples and propulsive drum'n'bass beats. The effect was startling: a music that retained the spaciousness, melancholy and tonal beauty associated with the Nordic jazz tradition while plunging headlong into the sound-world of electronic dance and studio production. Across the album, long, mournful trumpet lines float over shifting electronic landscapes that range from hushed and cinematic to driving and percussive, creating a brooding, widescreen atmosphere that feels both organic and machine-made. Khmer became a manifesto for what would be called "future jazz" and helped ignite the entire nu-jazz movement, inspiring a generation of musicians and producers to explore the territory between improvisation and electronica. More than a quarter-century later it has lost none of its impact, sounding as fresh, mysterious and forward-looking as ever. Genuinely groundbreaking and endlessly atmospheric, it remains essential listening for anyone drawn to the meeting point of jazz, ambient and electronic music. Its impact reached well beyond jazz, finding an audience among fans of electronic, ambient and post-rock music, and it remains a touchstone for the genre-blurring sensibility that defines so much contemporary listening. This vinyl reissue restores the album's deep bass and widescreen production to the format, where its cinematic atmosphere truly comes alive.
