* Limited edition cassette - 50 copies with banner * The legendary soundtrack to Kenneth Anger's occult masterpiece, now available in a limited cassette edition on Kieh Kieh. Composed and performed by Bobby Beausoleil with his prison band The Freedom Orchestra, Lucifer Rising was recorded between 1975 and 1979 at Tracy Prison (Deuel Vocational Institution) in California. Working under extraordinary circumstances, Beausoleil crafted a 45-minute psychedelic symphony using instruments built in the prison handicraft shop - an achievement as improbable as it is extraordinary.
The music unfolds as a single continuous piece: dark, mesmerizing, and ritualistic. Electronic textures interweave with haunting trumpet fanfares, shimmering keyboards, and expansive guitar work, creating a sound world suspended between early Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, and the ceremonial ambience of Popol Vuh. Beausoleil's vision was to depict "mythical Lucifer awakening in his pit of despair, rekindling his torch, and rising like a phoenix" - and the music moves accordingly from sinister depths toward an increasingly luminous finale.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential soundtracks ever recorded and a cornerstone of psychedelic ambient music, Lucifer Rising remains as hypnotic and unsettling as ever.
