Franck Vigroux is a French musician, composer, and media artist, with a considerable body of work - integrating sound, new media, and performance - that stretches across the last 20 years. Primarily known as a guitar player, his musical gestures equally extend into electronics, modular synthesis, and compositions for contemporary classical ensembles.
Unquestionably an artist who refuses to be nailed down, his sprawling output - both solo and in collaboration with figures like Mika Vainio, Elliott Sharp, and Zeena Parkins, among others - ranges from electroacoustic and experimental electronic music, improvisation, radio works, noise, industrial techno, and avant-garde rock.
The first in Matière Mémoire Éditions’ MMXX series, Vigroux’s contribution, Tension 24, weaves an intricate expanse of textural ambience - a dark and brooding cavernous void, threaded with shimmering diamonds that more make the efforts title self explanatory. Rethinking the defining boundaries of both industrial and ambient music, the work’s density moves between immersive, jarring, acts of emotive release, almost completely side-stepping the forms beauty that often define much contemporary electroacoustic practice. A startlingly dystopian image arising in sound, Vigroux’s contribution to MMXX series is not for the faint of heart, but well worth the journey.
Matière Mémoire presents the MMXX Series. In anticipation of the year 2020, Matière Mémoire asked 20 great artists to create an original 20 minutes piece and an artwork. Throughout this year, each quarter will see the release of 5 new vinyls, available individually or as a bundle. Each record is limited at 500 copies and comes as a crystal clear vinyl featuring an original track of 20 minutes on one side, and a laser engraved artwork on the other. Each contained in a transparent sleeve printed with the MMXX logo, and each coming with a print of the artist artwork.
