Before the studio could tame an idea, Can were already somewhere new. The Peel Sessions Vol. 1 brings together recordings made for John Peel’s BBC Radio 1 programme between 1973 and 1975—music that moves freely between hypnotic rhythm, raw electronics and sudden, unexpected turns. Much of it is built from improvisation, with the band stretching each performance into its own world.

Across six tracks, Can turn the studio into a place of discovery. The momentum of “Up the Bakerloo Line with Anne” gives way to the restless pulse of “Return to BB City” and “Tape Kebab”; elsewhere, “Tony Wanna Go,” “Geheim (Half Past One)” and “Mighty Girl” reveal a band balancing precision with unpredictability. These are not polished recreations, but vivid documents of a group listening, responding and taking the music wherever it leads.

Featuring the core lineup of Holger Czukay, Michael Karoli, Jaki Liebezeit and Irmin Schmidt, with Damo Suzuki on the opening track, The Peel Sessions Vol. 1 captures Can in their element: adventurous, deeply connected and impossible to pin down. A compelling entry point for new listeners—and an essential piece of the story for longtime fans.
