1977, and for once the hype title undersells the goods: McCoy Tyner in trio with Ron Carter and Tony Williams on one half, Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette on the other - powerhouse piano meeting two of the greatest rhythm teams ever assembled, in a friendly heavyweight exhibition across four sides. Tyner in the late seventies was playing with almost frightening physical command, and both rhythm sections push him in different directions: Carter-Williams with that Miles-honed elasticity, Gomez-DeJohnette with volatile modern fire. The Milestone years were astonishingly consistent; this is one of their summits. Japanese Milestone 2LP, big sound, properly pressed.
