Roulette's gathering of late-fifties John Coltrane, named for his affectionate tribute to Sonny Rollins - one titan saluting another, in the brief golden moment when they were sparring partners at the top of the tenor world. Trane in transition: the Prestige-era discipline fully formed, the harmonic obsessions sharpening, the tools being forged that he would soon use to rebuild jazz entirely. The Roulette corner of the discography is less traveled than the famous label runs, which makes it a genuine sleeper - strong playing, interesting context, and a title track that swings with real affection. A nice find for the Coltrane shelf that thinks it has everything.
