The 1958 meeting of John Coltrane and guitarist Kenny Burrell - two Detroit-connected masters at the height of the Prestige era, with "Why Was I Born?" as the famous centerpiece: just tenor and guitar, no rhythm section, an intimate duet of a kind Trane almost never recorded. The full-band tracks balance blues feeling and harmonic sophistication with total naturalness; Burrell's warm, articulate lines meet the sheets of sound halfway and both men come away enriched. One of the most purely pleasurable sessions in either discography - a record that never argues, only plays. Waxtime reissue of the Prestige-era classic, easy to own and easy to love.
