A really groovy harp jazz trio -- one that moves through territory that's a bit like American player Dorothy Ashby on some of her small combo records -- but with Japanese musician Tadao Hayashi in the lead! The approach is relatively lean -- just the bass of Takao Kusagaya and drums of Koichi Suzaki for support -- which leaves Hayashi plenty of space to craft these amazing combinations of notes on the instrument, in a style that still has a gentle groove, even when mellow -- thanks to especially nice work on the bass! The tunes are mostly familiar, but sound really different in this setting -- and the album has a recording quality that really makes the strings resonate strongly -- maybe even more so than on a classic album by Ashby. Titles include "My Favorite Things", "Watch What Happens", "Wave", "The Impossible Dream", "Misty", and nice take on Barry White's hit "Love's Theme".
