Five years of silence, a Manhattan brownstone with the curtains shut, and then in 1981 Miles Davis walked back into a recording studio. The Man With The Horn is the sound of a man rebuilding from nothing, and it is a much stranger record than its reputation allows: half of it is loose, blues-based playing with a young Mike Stern tearing off rock guitar solos and Marcus Miller supplying bass lines of enormous elasticity, the other half is polished Chicago studio funk with vocals. Bill Evans, the saxophonist rather than the pianist, gets the tenor chair. Miles himself sounds tentative in places and completely commanding in others, which is exactly what a comeback should sound like.

Japanese CBS/Sony pressing with insert. The record that opened the last decade of his working life.
