Alors !!!
*Heavy brown board outer sleeve, obi strip, 180g vinyl. reissue of the rare Futura LP* Could the missing link between Eric Dolphy and Albert Ayler be the Michel Portal of 1970? After having worked alongside François Tusques defending a free jazz “made in France”, we find him here, heading up an international quintet of which each member is on fire: John Surman, Barre Phillips, Stu Martin and Jean-Pierre Drouet. The quintet had full leeway to break out the free-form in long ambient tracks to com…

Respect In Yule promises to be among the most fun and eclectic holiday albums ever – the album ranges from introspective to ecstatic, from the popular to the obscure, the sacred to the secular. In choosing the repertoire, The Respect Sextet wanted to pull together some of their favorite holiday music from all genres and view them through Respect-colored glasses. Featuring compositions by Misha Mengelberg, Loudon Wainwright III, Frank Loesser, Robbie Robertson (of The Band), Thelonious Monk, Jule…
Hum Dono

Dutton, Oliver Lomax. Alto Saxophone – Joe Harriott. Bass – Dave…

New Directions in Modern Music
Avant-garde jazz drummer Rashied Ali played with John Coltrane up until his death in 1967, appearing on final recordings like The Olatunji Concert and Interstellar Space. After Coltrane's death, Ali soon formed his own quartet, with Fred Simmons on piano, Stafford James on bass violin and Carlos Ward on alto sax and flute. The quartet's first release, New Directions In Modern Music, released on Ali's own Survival Records in 1973, exploded onto the free jazz scene, influencing the likes of Don Ch…

What Is...?
The first Wandering The Sound album in 2018 was the trio of Argentinian reedist Guillermo Gregorio, Spanish drummer Ramón López and Polish bassist Rafał Mazur, here extended to a quintet with pianist Satoko Fujii and trumpeter Natsuki Tamura for a 2019 concert at Alchemia in Poland, a masterful example of free improv based on a poem by Ikkyu Sojun, a Zen master from the 15th century.
At the Fields Edge
Taking its album title and the titles for three compositions from poems by Laura Winter, the German jazz quartet led by clarinetist Theo Jörgensmann with Christopher Dell on vibes, Christian Ramond on double bass and Klaus Kugel on drums present an advanced example of modern creative, chamber-oriented collective free jazz with a stunning level of communication.
Long Tall Sunshine
A really great trio set from drummer Barry Altschul – a record that easily swings between freer moments and straighter swing – thanks to the help of bassist Joe Fonda, and saxophonist Jon Irabagon – who blows tenor, soprillo sax, and alto clarinet! Fonda's bass may well be the rock of the set – a he's always a bit understated, but finds a way to bridge the space between Altschul's loose work on the kit, and the more soulfully cohesive lines of Irabagon's reeds. The tunes all have a loose structu…
