Kate Westbrook sings Arthur Rimbaud, William Blake, Paul Éluard and Bertolt Brecht on this record, and adapted the Rimbaud text herself. The trio, which took its name from the album title, had Mike Westbrook on piano and Chris Biscoe on soprano and alto saxophone and alto clarinet, and recorded at Parsifal Studios in London in July 1983, with Fiachra Trench producing.
Kate also plays tenor horn, piccolo and bamboo flute. The programme moves from Brecht and Kurt Weill's Kanonensong to a setting of Adrian Mitchell in Apple Pie, while The Ballad Of Billy Hughes and Bordeaux Lady carry her own words to Mike's music. The idiom is cabaret with room for jazz improvisation, and the Westbrooks put it out on their own label.
