The strongest of the Aurex jam records, largely because of the rhythm section. Tommy Flanagan, Richard Davis and Roy Haynes would elevate any front line, and the one they get here is formidable: Dexter Gordon at his most expansive, J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding reunited on trombones, Clark Terry supplying wit and Kenny Burrell filling the spaces. Jam sessions live or die on whether the participants are competing or listening. This one is unmistakably the latter, and the tempos stay sensible.
