Croydon, 1965: Ornette Coleman's famous London-area concert, arranged after a battle with the British musicians' union that he won by being classified a concert artist rather than a jazz act - and he took the classification completely seriously, opening with his wind quintet composition "Forms and Sounds" before unleashing the great trio with David Izenzon and Charles Moffett. The full evening across two LPs: chamber Ornette and fire Ornette, the notated ambitions and the improvising genius, the whole breadth of the man in one program - a statement about what he was and refused to be reduced to. The European documents of the 1965 trio are among the most treasured items in the entire discography, and this is the grandest and most complete of them, an event captured whole.
Japanese Polydor 2LP edition, handsome gatefold, quiet vinyl. For understanding the full scope of Ornette's ambition, there is no better single package.
