Eight acousmatic works by James Andean from 2010 to 2018, mostly made in Helsinki: sounds from Luc Ferrari's archives, Maria Callas as Medea, a refrigerator in a Greek monastery, the inside of a piano and a garbled recording of John Cage.

Assemblance(s) collects eight acousmatic works by James Andean, written between 2010 and 2018, most of them at Studio Erkki of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and premiered in the Acousmatica concerts at the Helsinki Music Centre. The last, Valdrada, was made in Leicester, where he now teaches. Each piece starts from a sharply defined source and follows it somewhere else.

Déchirure was composed for the Presque rien 2013 project, which opened Luc Ferrari’s sound archives to new works; its tearings are musical, personal and literal, and it won 2nd prize at the Prix biennal Presque rien. Hyvät matkustajat began as a sonic postcard from Finland made of field recordings, then turned inward towards spectral landscapes. Valdrada takes its title and its theme of memory from Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities. Psygeío grew from a quick recording of the refrigerator hum in the Old Jesuit Monastery at Áno Sýros, made during a residency spent mostly recording wind. Spores is built only from short passages recorded inside a piano, first premiered at the Spor Festival in Aarhus as half of a dual work. Maledetta treats the voice of Maria Callas as Cherubini’s Medea and a piano reduction, in a portrait of Medea’s shifting states. Medusan Torso fixes on a timeline the material of an installation made with visual artist Merja Nieminen. Between the Leaves began when an output error turned a recording of John Cage speaking into noise, in Cage’s centenary year; it slows to a halt two thirds of the way through, then runs back to where it began.

Born in Ottawa in 1972, Andean studied at McGill University in Montréal and at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, and lectures at De Montfort University in Leicester. He works in acousmatic music and improvisation, and is a founding member of groups including Rank Ensemble, LOS Duo and VCA.

James Andean is a composer, but also does free improvisation and music performance in groups such as Rank Ensemble, The Tuesday Group, and Plucié/DesAndes. His Assemblance(s) is both maximal and lively. At any rate, he’s good with creating strong dynamics and jarring shifts in timbre through his editing, particularly on pieces like Déchirure, whose very title indicates it’s all about “ripping up” the sound. He uses field recordings, but very precise ones — and can tell you an interesting travelogue story about each one (e.g. the old Jesuit monastery in Greece where the wind gave him many moments of epiphany). He also uses piano and percussion in his work, and samples of famed opera singer Maria Callas on Maledetta, his unsettling sound portrait of the terrifying Medea character. I’m also warming gradually to Valdrada, which is not only a fascinating sonic enigma, but is prefaced with an Italo Calvino quote; anyone who reads Calvino is OK in my book. A strong and varied set with a lot of great compositional ideas, backed up by life experience and insightful observations.
