Espaces Lointains gathers six works that John Young realized between 2017 and 2023 at the Music, Technology and Innovation Research Laboratory of De Montfort University in Leicester. Several were conceived for 8, 16 or 16.2 channels and appear here in stereo. Most start from his own field recordings, set against digitally generated or transformed sound.
Sweet Anticipation, dedicated to his daughters, works with recordings made in New York; a chance encounter with subway preachers suggested the title, borrowed from David Huron’s study of musical expectation. Arioso grew from a humid September night in Oberlin, Ohio, where crickets and the beep of pedestrian crossing signals formed an unlikely duet; it won an audience prize at the 14th Destellos competition. Hidden Spaces is a sound diary in three parts: a lake in Östergötland, a squeaking escalator in Montréal’s Outremont metro station, and young pigs at the animal park around the hut where Gustav Mahler composed near Dobbiaco, with a hand clap recorded inside the hut as an impulse response.
Filaments and Phases sets the Leicester poet Simon Perril, whose Sun Deck Set Cogitation was made by erasure from two texts by Claude Lévi-Strauss written at sea in 1935 and 1941; Perril’s reading is perforated and rebuilt in sound. Three Spaces in Mid-Air won first prize at the 6th Klang ! competition in Montpellier, and Le chant en dehors, named after a Francis Poulenc instruction, won the Francis Dhomont Jury Prize at Akousmatique 2022.
Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1962, Young studied at the University of Canterbury with John Cousins and then with Denis Smalley at the University of East Anglia. After teaching at Victoria University of Wellington, he joined De Montfort University in 2000, where he is Professor of Composition.
