George Russell had written the Lydian Chromatic Concept in the fifties, handed Miles and Coltrane the theoretical apparatus for everything that followed, and then spent years unable to get proper work in America. He moved to Scandinavia. At The Beethoven Hall catches the European band with Don Cherry in the front line, playing Russell's compositions at length: dense, rhythmically knotted writing, wide open solo space, and an argument between composition and improvisation that neither side wins.
