Three sessions from the forties collected under a title that undersells them. Ben Webster is the reason to reach for it: the breathiest, most physically present tenor sound in the music, capable of a whisper on a ballad and a genuine roar when provoked, and by this period entirely in command of both. Corky Corcoran was a Harry James protégé who could play a great deal more than his reputation allows, and Albert Ammons brings the boogie-woogie piano tradition into the room. Mono, historical, and full of life.

Mercury pressing, mono. Compilation rather than an original album, and worth it for the Webster alone.
