Ginga is not a conventional artist’s book, a memoir, a discography or a deluxe piece of fan archaeology. It moves more like a signal picked up from a crooked antenna: part visual diary, part underground chronicle, part field recording of a mind that has spent decades turning electric guitar, feedback, distortion, drawing and language into methods of escape. This newly expanded edition brings the acclaimed collection by Seiichi Yamamoto to English-language readers in a substantially reimagined form, with all-new artwork, additional photography, full-colour printing and an exclusive CD of remixed and new music from Omoide Hatoba and Suido Megane Satsujin Jiken.

Yamamoto occupies a singular place in Japanese experimental culture. Best known internationally for his work with Boredoms and Omoide Hatoba, he has also built an immense and wildly various body of work as a solo musician, improviser, composer, filmmaker, writer, painter and photographer. His art has never respected the tidy borders between disciplines. A guitar line can behave like graffiti on a concrete wall; a drawing can seem to carry the voltage of an amplifier pushed close to collapse; an anecdote can pivot from ordinary life into surreal invention without warning. Ginga gives that unruly continuity a physical form. It is a book that does not attempt to stabilize Yamamoto’s world. It lets it flicker, collide and multiply.

The original Japanese edition of Ginga appeared in 1999, and the present edition does not merely translate or reproduce it. It revisits the material through a different visual frame, adding photographs not included in the Japanese publication and presenting the book in full colour. The result makes visible an aspect of Yamamoto’s practice that recordings alone cannot contain. His imagery is neither a decorative accompaniment to the music nor a separate gallery pursuit. It belongs to the same impulse: quick, tactile, sometimes comic, sometimes haunted, full of textures that feel rescued from the margins of daily life. Images behave like sounds here - scraped, overloaded, abrupt, intimate and unexpectedly tender.

The accompanying CD deepens that logic. It features remixed material in a Boretronix-like spirit alongside new music by Omoide Hatoba and Suido Megane Satsujin Jiken, two projects central to Yamamoto’s sprawling underground mythology. Omoide Hatoba’s volatile cross-genre energy has long made room for abrasive rock, pop mutation, free improvisation and forms too unruly to name without diminishing them. Suido Megane Satsujin Jiken brings another angle on Yamamoto’s taste for sonic mischief and altered states, allowing the CD to function less as a bonus item than as an extension of the book’s internal weather. The music is not there to illustrate the pages. It complicates them, stains them and sends them back into motion.

Published by Public Bath Press as a 244-page paperback with CD, Ginga documents an artist who has consistently treated excess as a form of precision. Yamamoto’s work can be noisy, funny, grotesque, delicate or downright bewildering, often within the same gesture. Yet its apparent disorder is sustained by a rare sensitivity to timing, texture and surprise. He understands that an idea can be strongest when it arrives sideways - as a warped image, an overheard phrase, a damaged chord or a burst of rhythm that refuses to settle into a predictable role.
