Stanley Turrentine, Freddie Hubbard, George Benson, Milt Jackson, Ron Carter, Hubert Laws, Johnny Hammond and Hank Crawford, playing long open-ended versions of the label's hits with no arrangements to hide behind. The studio records were immaculate and a little airless; live, the same material stretches out and gets considerably funkier. Hubbard in particular plays like a man determined to win something. Two LPs, all of it grooving.
