Hollywood Palladium, 1971, and Creed Taylor puts the entire CTI roster on one stage. Stanley Turrentine, Freddie Hubbard, George Benson, Milt Jackson, Ron Carter, Hubert Laws, Johnny Hammond and Hank Crawford, playing long open-ended versions of the label's hits with no arrangements to hide behind. The studio records were immaculate and a little airless; live, the same material stretches out and gets considerably funkier. Hubbard in particular plays like a man determined to win something. Two LPs, all of it grooving.
CTI double LP, gatefold. The label's aesthetic at full strength and with the polish knocked off.
