A Detroit pianist with a conservatory training and a completely unshowy virtuosity, who spent his career as everybody's first-call sideman and made comparatively few records under his own name. Roland Hanna could play stride, bop, Gershwin and Chopin with equal authority and had a touch that other pianists talk about with something close to envy. This trio date for the Salvation imprint, distributed through Creed Taylor's CTI operation, is Hanna working the standard format with total control: elegant voicings, an unfailing sense of tempo, and just enough harmonic sideways movement to keep you paying attention.
