*170 copies limited edition* "The city where I live was created by digging holes : removing stones from the ground, then making buildings with them. The only hill on the island was quarried. Elsewhere, they just dug giant square pits. Over time, many of these holes became dumps of some kind; the Francon quarry became a snow dump. Half the snow plowed from the streets of Montreal after each storm is loaded onto trucks and dumped in the 70 metres deep hole. Every winter, snow piles up there. Some of it melts in the summer but traces of particularly stormy winters accumulates at the bottom. The glacier of Montreal. Two artificial meltwater lakes have formed of a surprisingly turquoise colour.
The 94 hectares hole is fenced off and almost completely hidden from view at street-level. Plans for the construction of a RV campsite and a giant Wal-Mart have been considered, then abandoned. Residents of the neighbourhood are mobilizing to be consulted on future development plans of the site.
Biologists are currently studying the biodiversity of Carrière Francon, which is at the same time a highly contaminated and a busy wetland habitat for insects and birds.
Through a hole in the fence, I visited the site several times between summer 2024 and winter 2025, carrying along recorders, microphones, rope and battery-powered contraptions. All the recordings were made before the historic snowfalls of February 2025." - Anne-F Jacques
