In november 2017 I was on a guest visit at CalArts hosted by  Michael Pisaro-Liu. It was the first time I was in California, but even though it was my first time there, the Californian landscape seemed oddly familiar to me. I remember when driving from the airport to Valencia (and CalArts) looking at the passing hills experiencing a sort of deja vu.

Even though the air was different and the colours and temperature was (very) different from that of the marsh landscapes of my childhood in Denmark, California seemed familiar to me - almost like I had been there before. Then it dawned on me, being a part of the “Beverly Hills” generation - that I had been exposed to that landscape again and again by watching the Beverly Hills 90210 series everyday for several years (as well as other Hollywood series). It was a true hyperreal moment for me - a moment in which the Beverly Hills series seemed to have created its own reality within my mind.

Fata Morgana is a work in two parts; The first part, took place and was recorded in a a forest close to my parents home in the western part of Jutland and is a recording from 2021 of me playing the alto recorder. The second part is thought as a replacing of the first part, and was made in 2024 by Michael Pisaro-Liu in California.
