Recorded live at the Village Vanguard in 1973, and the best available argument that the American Quartet was the most interesting band Keith Jarrett ever led. Dewey Redman brings a tenor sound out of Fort Worth that is rough, vocal and completely unlike anything in the ECM world; Charlie Haden and Paul Motian supply a rhythm section that had already spent years playing free with Ornette and Bill Evans respectively. Jarrett plays piano, soprano saxophone and assorted percussion, and the music moves between country-flavoured melody, gospel and outright collective abstraction, sometimes within one piece.
Japanese Impulse! pressing. Loose, argumentative and considerably wilder than the solo records that made his name.
