After three years off the stand, practising on the Williamsburg Bridge and refusing to record, Sonny Rollins came back in 1962 and signed to RCA, and the records he made there are among the strangest and most interesting of his career. The Standard Sonny Rollins is exactly what it says and exactly not what it says: familiar material, approached by a saxophonist who had spent his sabbatical dismantling his own habits and had come back playing longer, more angular and considerably more abstract lines. He worries a melody like a dog with a rope. Nothing here is a routine reading.

Japanese RCA pressing. The post-bridge period, which took decades to be properly appreciated.
