The Saint-Paul-de-Vence performances have a special glow in the discography: outdoors, in France, before a devoted audience, Ayler playing with an urgency that half a century has not diminished by a single degree. The Japanese market always understood this catalog better than most, and treated it accordingly. A fine way to own the last chapter, and to hear how much life was still in the music at the very end.
