Where it started. Before ESP, before the trio with Peacock and Murray, before the myth, there was this: Albert Ayler in Stockholm, 1962, wrestling the standard repertoire into new shapes in front of a small and probably very confused audience. The Sonet edition of his debut recordings, the version most European collectors grew up hunting. Raw, searching, completely honest music - you hear a man who has already decided there is no way back, only forward. The bebop heads are still there, the changes are still there, but the sound is from another world entirely. Essential listening for understanding everything that came after.
