The side-long title track, built around Juno Lewis' vocals, percussion and poetry, is one of the most hypnotic things John Coltrane ever recorded - New Orleans ritual meeting the expanded 1965 band, with Pharoah Sanders adding his fire and the groove rolling like a river ceremony. It occupies a unique place in the discography: neither the classic quartet nor the full late-period tempest, but a third thing, earthy and strange and completely absorbing. The flip side delivers "Vigil" and "Welcome", two faces of 1965 Trane - combat and benediction. A deep-catalog favorite that regularly converts casual listeners into completists.
