After Kogun broke the mould, the Toshiko Akiyoshi - Lew Tabackin Big Band spent the rest of the seventies proving it had not been a one-off. March Of The Tadpoles keeps the same method: charts written for specific players rather than for sections, Japanese material woven into the harmony rather than dropped on top of it, and a rhythm section that understands that big band writing this dense only works if the pulse stays light. Tabackin remains the great soloist of the operation, his flute playing in particular carrying an edge that most jazz flute simply does not have.

Japanese RCA pressing. Akiyoshi wrote every note, conducted from the piano and never got remotely the credit she was owed at the time.
