Oliver Nelson's septet date remains the best-argued case for arrangement as the central jazz art: Eric Dolphy playing alto and flute at his most jagged, Freddie Hubbard bright and hard, Bill Evans providing a cool centre that keeps the whole thing from catching fire, and "Stolen Moments" opening proceedings with a melody so good it has been played nightly somewhere in the world ever since. Under forty minutes, seven pieces, nothing wasted.
