September 30th, 1965, the Penthouse in Seattle, and the classic quartet in the process of tearing itself apart on purpose. John Coltrane had brought Pharoah Sanders into the band, added Donald Garrett on second bass and bass clarinet and Carlos Ward on alto, and what happens across these four sides is the sound of a group deliberately overloading itself. Elvin Jones plays through the whole thing like a man arguing with the weather. Nearly an hour of "Evolution" occupies the centre of the set. Not released until 1971, well after Coltrane's death, and still one of the most extreme documents anyone put out under a major label logo.
