Atlantic kept opening the vaults after John Coltrane died, and this is one of the better results. The Coltrane Legacy gathers material from the 1959 to 1961 period, which is to say the years when he was working out Giant Steps, absorbing Ornette's book, taking up soprano and assembling the quartet that would carry him through the rest of the decade. Alternate takes and unissued pieces, but nothing here sounds like scraps. The band shifts between the Tommy Flanagan and McCoy Tyner eras, and hearing the two side by side tells you more about what changed than most essays manage.
