The Fillmore, 1967, and the title is not ironic. Charles Lloyd's quartet had become the improbable bridge between the jazz world and the San Francisco counterculture, sharing bills with rock bands and finding that the audience listened harder than the jazz clubs ever had. Love-In catches all of it: modal vamps that go on long enough to become hypnotic, Keith Jarrett playing with a physicality that would horrify his later self, Jack DeJohnette driving hard, and Lloyd's tenor and flute carrying melodies simple enough for anybody in the room to follow. Historically fascinating, and a genuinely good record.

Atlantic pressing. The moment jazz and the counterculture actually met, rather than merely being described as having done so.
