After Charles Mingus died in 1979, the musicians who had passed through his bands assembled to keep the book alive, and Mingus Dynasty became the most durable repertory project in jazz. Live At Montreux catches an early edition of it in front of a festival crowd, playing the compositions with the authority of people who had learned them from the man himself, in rehearsals that were famously not gentle. The advantage of a band like this is that the music was never fully written down in the first place: it lived in the players, and here they are, playing it.
