1970, before either man had built the institution he is now remembered for. Gary Burton was already an established bandleader; Keith Jarrett was a young pianist who had just left Charles Lloyd and was about to join Miles. Put together at Atlantic, they made a record that sits somewhere between jazz, folk-rock and chamber music, with Sam Brown's guitar giving several tracks an almost pastoral quality. Jarrett contributes most of the writing and it is recognisably his: modal, melodic, faintly hymn-like. The vibraphone and piano combination works better than it has any right to.

Atlantic pressing. Early, undervalued, and a nice reminder that neither of them arrived fully formed.
