November 1974, Avery Fisher Hall, and after twenty-two years the Modern Jazz Quartet walked off stage and dissolved. John Lewis's vision of jazz as chamber music - dinner jackets, fugal writing, absolute discipline - had made them the most respectable band in the music and, for exactly that reason, a target for anyone who wanted their jazz sweaty. What the recordings keep proving is how much heat there was underneath: Milt Jackson's blues playing was never contained by the arrangements, and Percy Heath and Connie Kay swung harder than the tuxedos suggested. Two LPs, and an emotional occasion audible throughout.
Atlantic double LP, Japanese pressing. They reformed in 1981, which does nothing to diminish this.
